Dig Dates !

Dating has a new look. In fact, it has a companion!

Nascar in Vegas!

2019 is a monumental year as my father will be turning 75. Growing up, spontaneity was not in our vocabulary. Don’t get me wrong, we did a ton of fun stuff but everything was carefully planned and budgeted. As my wife and I sat and thought about what it meant to turn 75, we wanted to start the year off by doing something that my dad wouldn’t be compelled to do by himself. The choice became quite apparent as we considered my dads passions. If anyone know Dennis, he loves all things fast and loud, namely cars.

Jane and I frequent Las Vegas and as we watched the rain fall one dreary Seattle morning, inspiration struck. A quick Google search revealed that Nascar was due to make a stop at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the coming months. We had our plan!

Fast forward several months later as we watch my dads eye swell in excitement as he sees Vegas for the first time in 20 years. Having lived there back in the early ‘80’s, the only thing familiar were the surrounding mountain ranges. It was fun watching him relive memories and soak in the urban sprawl that now spans the entire valley.

Race day was an overwhelming experience. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway is a massive but very fan friendly facility. Pit passes provided and unprecedented experience and in the grandstands, you’d be hard pressed to find a bad seat.

The memories of watching my dad and wife bond were priceless.

I traveled light and only came armed with a Canon 7d with an 30mm 1.4 Sigma lens.

The weather was absolutely perfect for great photos and a competitive and wreck-free race!

Later that evening, Dad had enough energy to walk Fremont Street with us and pay witness to multiple forms of debauchery and shenanigans.

The trip was a huge success and helped continue to shape how we appreciate life and all the blessings it brings.

IMATS Vancouver 2018

One of the most intriguing and educational trips of 2018 was to Vancouver, BC for IMATS, the International Make-up Artists Trade Show. The trip was sponsored in part by our partnership with Black Tie Makeup. Owner Lisa is passionate about continued education to ensure her and her team of artists are at the cutting edge of all things beauty.

IMATS

Vancouver 2018

This was my first time to a make-up specific convention and I was thoroughly overwhelmed with the amount of time and effort that goes into all of the different genres of artistry. The show offered a wide variety of classes and seminars even some specific to how to photograph make-up.

What I found thoroughly impressive was the accessibility to the educators and professional artists. The overall vibe in the room was that of kinship, camaraderie, and growth. We had the pleasure of meeting several icons in the make-up industry including YouTube star Mimi Choi and film legend Ve Neill.

As a photographer, we often draw inspiration from a multitude of sources. This trip was very impactful and I look forward to attending again this year!

Oh, and Vancouver itself was utterly beautiful; truly one my favorite cities!

Snow in Seattle

Its winter in the Pacific Northwest and at the time of writing this we are thoroughly sick of the snow! Several days ago we had the first real snow fall of the season and Seattle was painted in a beautiful white coat of fresh snow. Excitement was high where we live in downtown Kirkland so we decided to venture out and explore the freshly fallen snow.

If there’s one thing you’ll learn about my wife is that she absolutely loves photos so she jumped at the opportunity for a snowy photoshoot. I had recently picked up a second hand Canon 7d on OfferUp so I figured this was the perfect opportunity to take it for a test run. I had never worked with a crop sensor camera but a wider lens made a great pairing. Jane styled her makeup and picked out several cute and cozy outfits. For a camera that is the better part of 10 years old, I was thoroughly impressed! Of course it helps to have beautiful subject matter :-)

We ended the day with a hot cup of coffee and a warm cookie from Metropolitan Market.

Now at the time writing this, several days later, we are ready for the snow to be gone. Mother nature has had life on hold for the past few days and we are ready for our upcoming trip to Las Vegas.
